A recent Salmonella outbreak has been linked to contact with live baby chicks sold by Mt. Hatchery of Cincinnati, OH, according to a report by the Food Safety News.
A total of 163 infected persons with strains of Salmonella Infantis, Salmonella Newport, and Salmonella Lille were reported earlier this week, jumping from 144 just last month. The epidemic has been reported in 26 states nationwide, including two from Texas. Symptoms of Salmonella include fever, abdominal cramps, diarrhea, vomiting, headache and body aches.
In a report by the Food Safety News, the illnesses have been linked to contact with live baby chicks sold by Mt. Hatchery of Cincinnati. Mt. Healthy Hatchery is the same company linked to the illnesses from Salmonella Altona and Salmonella Johannesburg in 2011, both of which infected 96 people. Veterinarians from the Ohio Department of Health visited the hatchery in May 2012 and prepared endorsements for safety enhancement.
