School Bus Carrying At Least 12 Students Crashes into Ravine

At least a dozen children were aboard a school bus that hit a guardrail and crashed into a ravine Thursday morning.

One Child Ejected from School Bus

According to reports, seven to eight ambulances responded to the scene of a school bus crash in St. Louis Thursday morning. Police say the bus first crashed into a guard rail before traveling into a ravine.

The crash resulted in one student being ejected out of the bus through the emergency door, and the bus driver became trapped in the wreckage.

The bus wan en route to an elementary school when the crash happened.

Authorities are working to determine how and why the crash occurred.

School Transportation Accident Statistics

  • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 1,344 people killed in school-transportation-related crashes recorded between 2004 and 2013. This averages to 134 fatalities per year.
  • Of the 1,344 fatalities, only 8 percent were occupants of school transportation vehicles.
  • Most (71%) of the people who lost their lives in these crashes were occupants of other vehicles involved in the crashes.
  • Nonoccupants, including pedestrians, bicyclists, etc., accounted for 21 percent of the fatalities.
  • Among the 106 occupants killed in school transportation vehicles between 2004 and 2013, 45 were drivers and 61 were passengers.
