School Bus Overturns in Central Texas, Students Hospitalized

At least nine students were hospitalized Thursday after a Teague ISD school bus overturned on Interstate 45 in Leon County.

About the Leon County School Bus Accident

According to KWTX, the accident occurred in the southbound lanes of the interstate near mile marker 164.

At least nine students were injured with one student being airlifted to St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital in Bryan. The student was conscious and talking, but appeared to have suffered a neck injury.

The bus was transporting 35 to 36 male and female members of the Teague High School track team as well as the driver and two other adults.

No other vehicles were involved in the accident. The incident remains under investigation.

School Transportation Crash Statistics

  • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 1,344 people killed in school-transportation-related crashes recorded between 2004 and 2013. This averages to 134 fatalities per year.
  • Of the 1,344 fatalities, only 8 percent were occupants of school transportation vehicles.
  • Most (71%) of the people who lost their lives in these crashes were occupants of other vehicles involved in the crashes.
  • Nonoccupants, including pedestriansbicyclists, etc., accounted for 21 percent of the fatalities.
  • Among the 106 occupants killed in school transportation vehicles between 2004 and 2013, 45 were drivers and 61 were passengers.
