According to several news outlets, including the Northwest Florida Daily and NBC News, Mark Baumer, 33, had been actively attempting to raise awareness of the dangers of climate change and would have been in Ohio last week had it not been for a blizzard that forced him to turn south.
Baumer was struck while walking along Highway 90 in Walton County, Florida around 1:15 p.m. last Saturday. According to the Florida Highway Patrol, charges are currently pending against Sonja Siglar, 51, who was driving the SUV truck that took Baumer’s life.
According to the 2016 report released by Florida’s Integrated Report Exchange System (FIRES), there were a total of 391,208 vehicle crashes that occurred in the state last year resulting in 251,206 injuries and 3,053 deaths.
Of those, 8,907 involved pedestrians resulting in 606 pedestrians.
Specifically, there were a total of 280 total crashes for Walton County itself, and 83 injuries that resulted from them, although no reported fatalities before the recent accident involving Baumer.
