According to The Denver Post, a Colorado State Highway Patrol trooper sustains fatal injuries after a semi-truck crashes into him while he investigated another crash on Friday afternoon in Castle Rock.
The trooper, Cody Donahue, responded to a crash on Interstate 25 near Tomah Road when the fatal wreck occurred. The tractor-trailer struck the 11-year Colorado State Patrol veteran while he was outside his vehicle investigating the earlier crash scene.
Donahue died at the scene, marking the third Colorado State Trooper to die in the line of duty since May 2015, reports The Denver Post. Police detained the truck driver and will likely arrest and charge him pending the investigation.
According to The Denver Post, investigators are viewing footage from cameras on Donahue’s vehicle and the semi-truck.
Motorists are urged to move over when they spot emergency vehicles in the shoulder, reports The Denver Post. A spokesman for the State Highway Patrol says crashes like this one can absolutely be avoided.
