A recent survey by a non-profit advocacy group found that recalled infant sleepers are still be using by many daycare centers. These dangerous sleepers have been linked to infant injuries and deaths across the U.S.
According to FOX News, Kids in Danger (KID) worked with the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) to contact more than 600 childcare facilities between June 20 and July 10. Based on information gathered from the 376 daycares that responded, the groups determined that roughly one in 10 facilities are using dangerous infant sleepers that have been previously pulled from the market.
The surveyors specifically focused on facilities in Texas, Wisconsin, and Georgia. In Texas and Wisconsin, the use of recalled products is banned by law.
The alarming report echoes concerns raised by a 2016 report that found 25 of 50 states did not have any kind of regulation concerning recalled products in childcare and daycare facilities.
More than 5 million infant sleepers have been recalled following a series of deaths and injuries. The recalls have included major brands including Fisher Price, Baby Einstein, Disney Baby, Bright Starts, and Ingenuity.
Fisher Price’s sleepers alone have been linked to 10 infant deaths thought the American Academy of Pediatricians suspects the death count may be as high as 32.
Consumers are urged to check if there sleepers are among those recalled, and parent should communicate with their childcare providers to ensure they have a clear policy and procedure for checking for and removing recalled children’s products from the facility.
