The Acorn reports that both Irene and Kate Edwards were both educators from the Simi Valley and Oak Park unified school districts.
The mother, Irene, 64, died at the scene. Her daughter, Kate, 33, was rushed to Seton Hospital Williamson where she died the same night.
Rick Edwards, Irene’s husband and Kate’s father, and Dave Foy, Kate’s Fiance, were also in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Rick is still in critical condition while Dave escaped with only minor injuries.
The family was on their way to a wedding rehearsal dinner for Kate’s brother, Clayton Edwards, when the accident occurred.
According to Stewart McGugan, principal of Oak Park Independent School and Oak View High School, “Kate was special both as a person as well as a talented and committed teacher. We will miss her. Our thoughts and prayers are now focused on her father who is in intensive care at a local Texas hospital.”
Kate Edwards was very involved in the community. Besides teaching, she also ran a student leadership group and supported many causes including raising money for troops overseas, helping foster students at Casa Pacifica, and animal-rescue work.
“She was also an avid dog lover,” McGugan said. “She was all about dog rescuing and not harming animals.”
Families of her students at the Oak Park School where she has taught for the last four years are also saddened to hear of the accident.
“This news saddens our hearts greatly,” said Julie Miller, the mother of a student at the Oak Park school.
“Kate’s smile, enthusiasm and care for her students meant so much to us all. We really loved her and will miss her more than words can express,” Miller said.
Irene Edwards had been working at Arroyo Elementary School as a special education instructor since 2013.
To help pay for Kate and Irene’s memorial service and Rick’s mounting medical costs, friends and family have started a fundraising campaign. Details for the memorial service have not been announced.
