Three Killed After Truck Collides with Church Youth Group Van

According to several news outlets, a box truck crossed the median and collided with a minivan carrying several church youth group members on their way to an event in Clarksburg, West Virginia, killing three of the youth group members and injuring five others.

Church Youth Group Members Traveling From Pennsylvania

Two of the victims were from Canonsburg, Pennsylvania – church volunteer Rhoda Malone and 17-year-old Breanna Africa. The other victim of the crash was identified by media outlets as 16-year-old Faith Dowler of North Strabane Township, Pennsylvania.

The church youth group was traveling to the Festival of Life, an outreach event for families that featured music and games.

Two people from the box truck and three others from the church group minivan were treated at a local hospital in Clarksburg for injuries, as reported by media outlets.

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • 3,903 people were killed in trucking accidents in 2014 – a slight decrease from the 3,981 deaths recorded in 2013.
  • Of those killed in 2014:
    • 17 percent were occupants of large trucks
    • 73 percent were occupants of other vehicles
    • 10 percent were listed as nonoccupants, including pedestrians and bicyclists
  • An additional 111,000 people were injured in trucking accidents in 2014.
