The fatal accident occurred on Route 15 near mile marker 99 at around 9:00 a.m. local time. Officials say a car with three elderly passengers was traveling northbound when it was struck by a tractor-trailer head-on. The tractor-trailer, loaded with sand, crossed over the center dividing line before hitting the car and overturning.
The driver of the car, 69-year-old Roderick V. Manifold, died at the scene of the accident. His two passengers, 69-year-old Demetria B. Manifold, his wife, and 91-year-old Marion J. Brewer, his mother-in-law, also succumbed to injuries sustained in the truck crash. WVIR reports that all three were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.
According to WVIR, the tractor-trailer driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene. Franklin L. Rowe, 51, was charged with reckless driving. Officials say additional charges are pending.
