Toxic “Forever Chemicals” Detected in Nearly Half of U.S. Tap Water
A new study by the U.S. Geological Survey has found that almost half of all tap water in the U.S. is contaminated with toxic chemicals known as “forever chemicals.”
45% of U.S. Drinking Water Contain Potentially Toxic PFAS
The number of people drinking contaminated water may be much higher than expected after a new study found that forever chemicals were present in roughly 45% of U.S. drinking water samples.
According to CNN, the study was focused on polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS), commonly referred to as forever chemicals due to the fact that they do not break down in the environment.
There are currently more than 12,000 types of PFAS, Burt the study only looked at 32 compounds.
The study looked at chemical presence in private wells and public water supplies, with concentrations being similar in both. However, researchers were not able to test the presence of the chemicals at a per-unit measure.
PFAS exposure has been linked to:
- Cancer
- Obesity
- Thyroid disease
- High cholesterol
- Decreased fertility
- Liver damage
- Hormone suppression
- Low birth weight
- Weakened childhood immunity
3M Facing $143 Billion in Litigation for PFAS Contamination
3M Co. is facing roughly 4,000 lawsuits as it is hit with litigation concerning its manufacturing of forever chemical products and contamination.
Many of the lawsuits were brought by state and local governments suing over pollution and cleanup costs associated with the chemical costs. CreditSights estimate that 3M could end up owing $143.7 billion in clean-up costs, well beyond the organization’s current market worth of $53 billion.
Other Companies Being Sued for Forever Chemicals and PSAS
Beyond 3M, several other companies are facing PFAS litigation. These include:
- DuPont
- Chemgaurd
- Kidde-Fenwal
- National Foam Inc
- Dynax Corp
- Corteva Chemours
