According to the Daily Union, two men were injured in a crash after an 18-wheeler and car collide head-on in Whitewater, Wisconsin, on Wednesday morning.

Semi-truck Transporting Tank of Ethanol

The injury accident occurred on U.S. Highway 12 near the Clover Valley Road overpass at around 10:10 a.m. local time. Officials say Ryan Gellings, 21, was driving a BMW east on the highway when he crossed over the center dividing line.

Gellings crashed head-on with a Volvo 18-wheeler hauling an ethanol tank traveling westbound, reports the Daily Union. The semi-truck driver, 43-year-old Marc Tracy, was taken to a hospital with moderate injuries. Gellings suffered critical injuries in the crash and was taken to Fort Memorial Hospital before being airlifted to a trauma center.

Officials say Tracy attempted to swerve to the right to avoid the BMW but was struck, reports the Daily Union. The head-on collision sent the BMW into the eastbound shoulder of the highway and the semi-trailer into the southbound ditch. Witnesses said Tracy was found crawling out and away from his truck due to the possibility of the dangerous payload of ethanol exploding.

The crash remains under investigation, reports the Daily Union. The cleanup and investigation on Highway 12 took crews around six hours to complete.
