About the Fatal Train Accident
The impact of the collision caused the car to land in the back yard of a nearby residence; fortunately, none of the home’s residents were injured.
A spokesperson for Union Pacific claimed the car went around the gate arms and stopped on the track preceding the collision.
Railroad Accident Statistics
The following information was gathered by the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA):
- In 2013, 2,087 railroad collisions resulting in 251 deaths and 929 injuries.
- This marked an increase from 2013 when 1,971 crashes and 232 deaths were recorded.
- About 75 percent of train v. motor vehicle collisions occurred within 25 miles of the motorist’s home and 50 percent occurred within five miles of the motorist’s home.
- Train accidents are roughly 20 times more likely to be fatal than auto accidents.
