According to NBC News, a pickup truck hauling a trailer crashed into a group of 10 motorcyclists after turning left onto a two-lane highway. The crash resulted in an explosion that left seven of the 10 motorcyclists dead.
Volodymyr Zhukovskyy, the driver of the truck, was arrested while the investigation of the cause of the collision is underway. He faces charges of homicide.
Zhukovskyy had been brought in on other charges before most notably for driving drunk. The group of motorcyclists belonged to a club for ex-Marines.
Since motorcycles afford much less protection than enclosed vehicles people riding motorcycles in accidents are almost 29 times more likely to die. Only about 50 percent of riders where helmets and of those that die almost 40 percent of them aren’t wearing one at all.
