According to KTLA 5 News, the mayor of Binghamton, New York, shared a dashcam video on Facebook of a pileup on Binghamton highway. The video shows the brave actions of bystanders in the aftermath of the crash, and it also shows the moment of the crash, which happened close to 4:30 P.M. on August 25, 2016 on Route 17 in Binghamton.

Details of the Crash

One of the cars involved burst into flames, and bystanders jumped in to help put out the fire and rescue the driver. The mayor is still trying to identify the people on the video so they can be recognized for their efforts.

Deputy Mayor Jared Kraham told CNN that they found two or three of the helping people, thanks to a flood of messages from people whose friends or families were involved. Once all of the names are received, the mayor’s office is planning to put together an event to commend the heroes and give the woman a chance to officially meet them.

The accident happened when a tractor-trailer plowed through afternoon traffic. Amazingly, no one was killed, and the rescued woman only suffered a few cuts and bruises. Ten people were taken to the hospital, and only two people suffered major injuries. However, the two people with serious injuries are expected to survive. The truck driver was ticketed for faulty brakes..

The mayor showed his appreciation for the heroes as well as the local police, firefighters, and the EMS first responders as he stated on Facebook, “Binghamton is safer because of you.”

Benefits of Dashboard Camera Recorders

According to Arrive Alive Company, which promotes Online Road Safety Awareness, there are many reasons why a dashboard camera recorder may be a good idea. One benefit is clear identification of cause and consequence in a car accident. Whenever someone is involved in a car crash, a dashcam is the perfect eye witness and real proof of what took place. Dashcam footage is a way to substantiate your claims in the court of law, and dashcams are wonderful in establishing what caused the crash.

Another benefit is that a dashcam is a mechanism to fight corruption and fraud as some people will purposely cause a crash then try to blame the other party. People even go as far as trying to extort money from the victim or fake injuries to collect payment from insurance companies. Therefore, dashcam footage is a perfect mechanism to stop these frauds.

Dashcams can also be used alongside vehicle tracking systems for supervision of speed, driving route and general driving behavior. The device can show unnecessary lane changes, poor following distance, and other dangerous driving activities that can reduce crashes.

Video evidence from a dashcam can also be used to report drunk drivers, distracted drivers, dangerous drivers, and road rage incidents.
