Pickup Truck Driver Killed After 18-Wheeler Ran a Stoplight

Witnesses say an 18-wheeler collided with a pickup after running a red light at an Austin intersection.

About the Fatal Trucking Accident

According to witnesses, an 18-wheeler heading north on Ronald Reagan Boulevard ran a red light and hit a pickup truck heading eastbound on Highway 29. Police arrived on the scene just before 9 a.m. The 39-year-old driver of the pickup was pronounced dead, and the 44-year-old driver of the 18-wheeler was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

According to KXAN, this is the second fatal collision involving an 18-wheeler in Williamson County in two days.

Red Light Running Deaths

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, more than two people are killed every day on U.S. roads by impatient and reckless drivers speeding through red lights.

“Drivers who decide to run a red light when they could have stopped safely are making a reckless choice that puts other road users in danger,” said Dr. David Yang, executive director of the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety.

Although speeding through a red light may seem easy in the moment, it can become a reckless habit that endangers you and others. If you can safely stop, do so.

Red Light Running Statistics

Information below provided by the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety:

  • 28% of crash deaths that occur at signalized intersections are the result of a driver running through a red light.
  • Per capita, Arizona has the highest rate of red light running fatalities while New Hampshire has the lowest rate.
  • Nearly half (46%) of those killed in red light running crashes were passengers or people in other vehicles and more than 5% were pedestrians or cyclists. Just over 35% of those killed were the drivers who ran the red light.
