According to ABC15, one person is dead and seven are injured in a crash involving 12 cars on the highway near Chandler, Arizona, on Wednesday afternoon.

Impairment Possibly a Factor

Officials say the massive injury accident occurred in the southbound lanes of State Route 347 at around 3:00 p.m. local time. A pickup truck traveling north all of a sudden crossed through the center median and into the southbound lanes, crashing into multiple vehicles. The crash occurred near the intersection at Riggs Road.

ABC15 reports that although a dozen vehicles were involved in the crash, some were just struck with pieces of debris. A fire official said seven people suffered from varying injuries, ranging from serious to critical. One person, who has not been identified, died in the multiple-vehicle crash.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing, but impairment may have played a role in the deadly wreck. State Route 347 was closed in both directions for several hours as crews cleaned up the wreckage from the pile-up.
