B&S Contracting were performing pavement milling near a gas station when a dump truck unloading asphalt reversed and ran over two workers, a man and woman.
The female victim was killed instantly, but the other was able to communicate with hand gestures before succumbing to his injuries. The victims were identified as Felimon Aizpuro II, 38, and Debbie Huffman, 50, of Port Republic.
The 60-year-old truck driver has not been charged as of this time.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), over 20% of all private worker fatalities occurred in the construction field.
OSHA considers the four most deadly accidents the “fatal four,” which includes falls, followed by electrocution, struck by object, and caught-in/between. The “fatal four” are responsible for over half of all construction worker deaths.
Eliminating the “fatal four” would save over 518 lives every year.
