Two Dead, Two Injured in Motorcycle Crash

According to News4Jax, two riders on a motorcycle died after colliding with a vehicle on Mayport Road in Atlantic Beach, Florida, on Thursday night.

Charges Pending for Van Driver

Kasey Whilden, 24, and Jennifer Reed, 42, rode south on Mayport Road at around 7:48 p.m. local time. A van with two occupants heading north attempted a turn onto West 10th Street, pulling out in front of the motorcycle.

Whilden and Reed died after crashing into the van’s passenger side. According to News4Jax, the passengers in the van sustained injuries and received treatment at a local hospital. The Florida Highway Patrol says charges are pending for the driver of the van.

News4Jax reports that neither motorcycle occupant wore a helmet at the time of the crash.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), 4,295 motorcyclists died in crashes in 2014. Here are some additional statistics regarding motorcycle crashes:

  • Helmets are about 37 percent effective in preventing motorcycle deaths and about 67 percent effective in preventing brain injuries.
  • Only 19 states and the District of Columbia require helmet use by all riders.
  • 30 percent of motorcyclist deaths in 2014 were under the age of 30.
