Two Dead in University City Collision

Two drivers were killed early Tuesday morning when their vehicles collided head-on on State Route 52 in University City, California.

Details of the Fatal University City Crash

According to NBC San Diego, the fatal crash occurred just after midnight Tuesday when a gray pickup truck traveling in the wrong direction struck a Mercedes Sedan.

The crash resulted in a fire, and both drivers were killed. There were no passengers in either car.

California Highway Patrol said they received a call concerning the truck driving the wrong-way about a minute before the fatal crash was reported.

The accident remains under investigation.

  • 35,092 people were killed in traffic crashes in the U.S. in 2015. This marked a 7.2-percent increase over the 32,744 deaths recorded in 2014 – the largest percentage increase recorded since 1966.
  • Of those killed in traffic accidents in 2015:
    • 22,441 were occupants of passenger vehicles
    • 5,376 were pedestrians
    • 4,976 were motorcyclists (operators and passengers)
    • 818 were pedalcyclists
    • 667 were occupants of large trucks
    • 227 were listed as other or as unknown
  • An additional 2,443,000 people were injured in traffic accidents in 2015.
