U.S. traffic deaths are estimated to top 40,000 for the second consecutive year, remaining at the 10-year high set in 2016.
While the estimates by the National Safety Council are not official federal figures, the report underscores a growing consensus among lawmakers and experts that traffic deaths are a public health crisis which needs to be addressed.
Current estimates put the death toll around 40,100 which would be down about 1 percent from 2016; however, the estimates would still mark a 6 percent increase over 2015.
NHTSA, on the other hand, estimated that car accidents resulted in 37,461 in 2016. Still, this marked a 5.6 percent increase from their 2015 estimates. Variations between the NCS and NHTSA estimates are likely due to the fact that the council includes parking lot, driveway, and private road deaths while NHTSA does not.
