The entire incident was caught on the dash cam of a vehicle traveling behind the bus. Fortunately, the driver of that vehicle was a trained emergency medical technician and responded to the situation without hesitation.
The medical technician Ryan Ciampoli can be scene exiting his vehicle and rushing over to the girl. Ciampoli told CNN reporters that he had to move the child as he felt the hot pavement and road traffic were both a hazard to the young girl.
The 4-year-old was first taken to a local hospital where she was reunited with her parents before being flown to a trauma center at mercy Hospital.
According to police, the bus driver was the only adult on the bus at the time of the incident.
Other children on the bus told authorities that the girl walked to the back of the bus where she pulled the latch and opened it. The bus driver pulled over after being alerted to the situation.
The bus driver called authorities, but by then emergency responders were already at the scene, having been called by bystanders.
The driver is not likely to face charges in the incident as police say it was just a tragic accident.
