Washington Beef LLC has recalled more than 30,000 pounds of beef over what the company calls “extraneous materials.” The affected ground beef chubs have a use-or-freeze-by date of Jan. 20, 2019.
According to FOX News, a consumer complained about a possible contamination in February. The complaint initiated the recall of 30,260 pounds of the beef. Neither Washington Beef nor the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has publicly named the material found in the product.
The FSIS recommends that consumers throw the product away or return it to the store for a refund.
Currently, Washington Beef says it’s not aware of any illnesses connected to the recall. The company recommends that concerned consumers should contact their health care provider.
Since 2013, meat recalls have increased by 83%. Researchers found that most contaminations happened at farms, with processed meats posing the greatest health risks to consumers.
