WFPD Officer Dies in Motorcycle Accident

A Wichita Falls Police officer was fatally injured Sunday when he was involved in a motorcycle accident, according Times Record News.

Details of the Wichita Falls Accident

On Sunday morning an off-duty police officer from Wichita Falls died after suffering serious injuries from a motorcycle accident.

Police Chief Manuel Borrego said Officer Calvin Ealey, 45, involved in a serious accident around 3:20 a.m. near the intersection of Kemp Boulevard and Call Field Road. According Borrego, Ealey was not wearing a helmet when he hit a curb and lost control of the motorcycle.

Ealey was rushed to United Regional Health Care in critical condition where he later passed.

No other vehicle was involved in the accident.

Motorcycle Safety

Motorcycles tend to be less stable and visible than cars. They also have high speed capabilities. This is dangerous because motorcycles do not provide riders the safety of an enclosed vehicle, making the rider more likely to be in a fatal accident.

Traumatic head injuries are common among fatally injured motorcyclists, making helmet use important.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a total of 4,381 motorcyclists died in crashes in 2013. Motorcycle deaths made up for 13 percent of all motor vehicle deaths in 2013.
