Woman, 74, Struck and Killed by Semi-truck on Highway Shoulder

According to WSYR, a woman sustained fatal injuries in a crash with a tractor-trailer on the side of the highway in Pamelia, New York, on Monday evening.

About the Fatal 18-wheeler Wreck

Joann Zando, 74, was stopped in her vehicle on the shoulder of Interstate 81 when the fatal accident occurred. At around 6:10 p.m. local time, the woman’s vehicle was hit by a semi-truck hauling lumber coming from behind.

WSYR reports that the tractor-trailer moved from the driving lane into the shoulder where it collided with the woman’s vehicle, sending both off the highway and into the grass. Zando was transported to SMC Hospital where she succumbed to injuries sustained in the semi wreck.

According to WSYR, no charges have been filed against the semi-truck driver as of yet. The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
