Worker Killed, Another Injured in Santa Cruz Accident

CBS San Francisco report that one worker was killed and another were injured when they were struck by a work truck while attempting to clear a landslide from Highway 17 in the Santa Cruz Mountains.

Reporters Were Covering Landslide When Accident Occurred

A KPIX reporter was already at the scene covering the landslide when the accident occurred. During the live video feed a car could be heard honking. Reports indicate that the honking was a witness trying to get the attention of a CHP officer to inform him of the accident

According to witnesses, the fatal accident occurred around 12 pm Thursday. Witnesses report a dump truck ran over two workers. One of the workers was crushed underneath the truck’s wheels. The other worker was trapped under the vehicle.

Officers and firefighters at the scene worked to free the injured worker. Once he was extracted, the worker was transported to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

Officials have identified the deceased as Bobby Gill, 54. Gill was a 15-year employee of Graniterock.

Crews are still working to clear the massive landslide from the highway.

  • 4,836 workers were killed on the job in 2015. This averages to more than 93 deaths per week or more than 13 deaths every day.
  • Of those killed, 4,379 were employed in private industry and 937 were in construction.
  • Among the leading causes of workplace death in 2015 were:
    • Falls
    • Electrocutions
    • Struck by object
    • Caught-in/between
