Police say a driver in a black SUV struck a construction barrel on Interstate 65 south of Ridge Road around 9:35 a.m. local time. The driver moved from the left lane to the middle lane behind an 18-wheeler before drifting into the right lane.
According to ABC 7 Chicago, the right lane was closed off with construction barrels, and the driver struck another barrel before crashing into the worker. The worker, Brandon Beau Dewayne Fiscus, 35, was working on a patch for the pavement when he was struck.
Fiscus was tossed over the black SUV and was struck head-on by another vehicle, throwing Fiscus 100 feet onto the road. ABC 7 Chicago reports that Fiscus died of massive blunt force trauma at the scene of the accident.
Police say the stretch has been a construction zone for months and has been marked with barrels, cones, and signs. According to ABC 7 Chicago, Fiscus worked for E & B Paving and leaves behind two children.
