Ironworker Dies Following Logan Airport Construction Accident

A Connecticut ironworker has died following a construction accident at Boston’s Logan airport.

Details of the Fatal Construction Accident

According to The Register Citizen, 54-year-old Lawrence O’Leary, was injured in a construction accident at the Logan International Airport on July 10. O’Leary succumbed to his injuries Friday evening.

Reports indicate O’Leary fell roughly 40 feet from a platform while working at a parking garage at the airport.

O’Leary is the second ironworker to die from injuries sustained at a Massachusetts job site in under six weeks. O’Leary had been an ironworker for more than 30 years.

U.S. Construction Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA):

  • 4,585 people were killed in on the job accidents in 2013. This averages to 88 deaths a week or more than 12 deaths every day.
  • 4,101 of the fatalities occurred in private industry and 828 were linked to construction accidents.
  • The four leading causes of death at construction sites in 2013 were:
    • Falls
    • Struck by object
    • Electrocution
    • Caught-in/between
