A man was found guilty in the deaths of two construction workers last week.

About the Fatal Accident

Jordan Stafford was indicted in November 2015 for his role in the 2014 crash on southbound I-69 that killed two highway construction workers, RTV 6 reports.

On Wednesday, Stafford was found guilty of two counts of reckless operation of a vehicle in a highway work zone – death of worksite worker and two counts of disregarding traffic control device or flagman in highway work zone – death of worker.

Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry said in November that complex circumstances in the crash investigation extended the length of the investigation and ultimately resulted in the decision to present the case to a grand jury.

Sentencing will be on August 2.

Statistics on Construction Worker Fatalities

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that:

  • During the 2003 to 2007 period, 639 workers were killed while working at a road construction site. During this same period there were 8,103 deaths in the construction industry.
  • The 639 worker deaths in road construction represent 7.9% of all deaths in construction.
  • Nearly half of these fatalities were attributable to a worker being struck by a vehicle or mobile equipment—more frequently by construction equipment than by tractor-trailers, vans, and cars.
