OSHA Investigates Fatal Corpus Christi Construction Accident

The U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has launched an investigation into a recent accident at a construction site for a oil storage tank that left two workers dead in Corpus Christi.

About the Corpus Christi Construction Accident

  • According to KRIS-TV, the accident occurred around 3:00 pm Sunday at an oil storage facility along Southern Minerals Road in Corpus Christi, Texas.
  • Two workers, Colton Huff, 19, and Andres Olivarez, 57, were crushed to death after a part of the storage tank collapsed.
  • Both men were employees for Tarsco, Inc., a California-based company that was contracted to build above-ground storage tanks.
  • Tarsco was previously fined $3,000 by OSHA in 2011 after inspectors determined that the company had not provided enough protection to keep workers from falling at another Texas facility.

Texas Workplace Injury Statistics

  • While the U.S. as a whole saw a 7 percent drop in the number of work related deaths recorded in 2012, Texas actually experienced an increase.
  • According to the San Antonio Express-News, the number of fatal workplace injuries increased 23 percent to 258 deaths for the year.
  • Roughly 12 percent of all work related deaths recorded in the U.S. involve contractors.
