South Carolina Construction Worker Injured in Accident

A South Carolina construction worker was taken to the hospital after being involved in an accident.

Details About the Construction Accident

A 34-year-old man was injured in a construction accident Tuesday afternoon in York County.

The man was reportedly dealing with a maintenance issue with an excavator and was standing beside the machine. According to Fort Mill and York County authorities, the man was became pinned under the vehicle’s tracks after the operator of the excavator began moving the vehicle.

The victim, who works for Mills & Rea Contracting Inc., was airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

His medical condition has not been released.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “A review of multiple national databases by NIOSH researchers found that trenching and excavation hazards during construction activities resulted in 488 deaths between 1992 and 2000 – an average of 54 fatalities each year.” Furthermore, the CDC reports that from 2000 to 2006, “U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data show that 271 workers died in trenching or excavation cave-ins.” The U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and & Health Administration reports, “the fatality rate for excavation work is 112% higher than the rate for general construction.”
