Worker Killed in SC Construction Accident
One worker was killed and a second was injured in a South Carolina construction accident last Thursday (June 14, 2012). The accident remains under investigation.
Details of the Deadly Construction Accident
According to reports, while construction crews were drilling a trench for a water line, a heavy piece of construction equipment fell on top of one worker and knocked him into a 16-foot trench. A second crew member was pinned by the equipment. The worker who fell in the trench died, the second worker was hospitalized.
Construction Company had Previous Violations
According to the Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), the construction company had two previous serious safety violations on file. One violation was for failure to inspect an excavation site daily to remove possible hazards; the other was for an inadequate protection system to protect workers from cave-ins. These violations cost the company $4,200 in fines in 2007. OSHA is actively investigating the circumstances of Thursday’s accident.
