About the Fatal Double-Decker Bus Accident

Reports say that on Thursday evening, a double-decker bus was traveling on the southbound 405 Freeway at El Segundo Blvd. near Hawthorne, Calif. when the accident happened. A teen, identified as Mason Zisette, 16, was standing on an “open-roof” when the bus drove under a freeway bridge.

Zisette was taken to a local hospital where he was listed in stable condition. However, Lt. Joe Bale from the coroner’s office confirmed that Zisette later died from his injuries.

California Motor Vehicle Accident Facts

The California Office of Traffic Safety recorded 2,857 motor vehicle-related fatalities statewide in 2012. The agency notes that about 38 percent of all drivers killed in car crashes that year tested positive for legal and/or illegal drugs. According to NHTSA estimates, about half of California’s traffic fatalities could have been prevented if the vehicle occupants had worn seat belts.
