Carlsbad Teen Arrested for Vehicular Manslaughter

A 17-year-old girl has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that left a young skateboarder dead.

Details of the Carlsbad Hit-and-Run

According to ABC 10 News, the teenager has been processed into the Kearny Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility and is facing charges of vehicular manslaughter, felony DUI and felony hit-and-run.

Police were able to locate the motorist after witnesses described seeing a silver Chrysler sedan fleeing southbound on Carlsbad Boulevard after the accident.

Despite life-saving measures, the skateboarder succumbed to his injuries. The San Diego Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that the victim was a 20-year-old male, but is withholding his identity until his family is properly notified.

Pedestrian Fatality Statistics

  • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrian accidents accounted for 14 percent of all traffic fatalities recorded in 2011 with 4,432 deaths.
  • The agency estimates that 73 percent of pedestrian fatalities occurred in urban areas, more than 70 percent occurred outside of an intersection and 70 percent occurred at night.
  • The NHTSA urges pedestrians to maintain visibility and to cross streets at crosswalks or intersections whenever possible.
