Chrysler Pacifica Minivans Recalled for Engine Stalls

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has recalled 154,000 Chrysler Pacifica minivans following complaints that the vans can stall suddenly while being driven.

Details of the Chrysler Pacifica Engine Stalls

The New York Times reports that certain conditions can cause the minivan’s engine control module to incorrectly assess the operating status, potentially causing the engine to stall. In order to resume driving following an engine stall, drivers reported having to shut of their and restart their vehicles.

Among the complaints filed by Pacifica owners were reports of engine stalls occurring in intersections and on highways. Fiat Chrysler confirmed one accident in connection with the engine stall defect.

Complaints began last year and after dealers and Chrysler engineers failed to pinpoint the problem, customers called on the automaker to buy back the minivans. In November, the Center for Auto Safety filed a petition calling on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to open a formal investigation into the defect and order a recall.

Recall Comes After a Series of Fiat Chrysler Recall Controversies

The Pacifica recall comes on the heels of two recent controversies involving Fiat Chrysler’s handling of recalls and recalled vehicles.

In 2015, NHTSA ruled that Fiat Chrysler had failed to promptly notify vehicle owners of recalls and delayed initiating repairs of defective models in 23 recalls covering roughly 11 million vehicles. The automaker was fined $105 million.

Fiat Chrysler was the subject of national headlines again last year when actor Anton Yelchin was killed by his Jeep Grand Cherokee which rolled backward down his driveway and crushed him. The vehicle was part of a recall related to defective electronic gearshifts, but it had not been repaired prior to the fatal accident. A wrongful death lawsuit was filed by Yelchin’s family.

Ford Urges 2,900 Pickup Owners to Stop Driving Their Vehicles Following Death

Ford Motor Co. has issued an urgent warning calling on the owners of 2,900 pickups to stop driving their vehicles after confirming yet another death linked to defective Takata-brand airbags.

About the Ford Pickup “Stop Driving” Warning

According to Reuters, the warning was issued following the death of a West Virginia man. An investigation of the July 2017 accident revealed that the man’s death was the result of a defective Takata airbag inflator. The investigation concluded in December.

A similar death was determined to have occurred in South Carolina in December 2015 and involved a similar vehicle. The latest death marks the 21st death to be linked to faulty airbag inflators manufactured by Takata.

Ford previously issued a recall for 391,000 2004-2006 Ranger pickups. The new action affects 2,900 of those vehicles, including 2,700 sold in the U.S. These owners of these 2,900 pickups are considered to be in Ford’s highest risk pool.

However, some products, specifically those under the brand name Hood and Kemps, may show a “best by” date of July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2019.

Healthy individuals may experience headache, fever, stiffness, nausea, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Toyota Expands Takata Airbag Recall to Include an Additional 600,000 Vehicles

Damaged car with passenger door open and view of deployed airbags

Toyota Motor Corp has announced that it is expanding an ongoing safety recall involving front passenger airbag inflators manufactured by Takata Corp. The expansion will cover about 601,3000 additional vehicles in the United States.

About Toyota’s Takata Airbag Recall

According to US News, more than 100 million airbag inflators have been recalled by Takata worldwide. Testing has revealed that the airbag inflators contain a volatile propellant that can cause airbags to inflate with excess force and essentially explode, sending metal shrapnel throughout vehicle cabins and into occupants.

So far, 180 injuries and 20 deaths have been linked to the defective airbag inflators. Most of the deaths occurred in the U.S. with the most recent death, one that occurred in Louisiana, being recorded last month.

Recalls have affected 19 automakers and about 34 million vehicles in the U.S. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced in June that only about 35 percent of recalled vehicles had been repaired.

Takata has since declared bankruptcy, and in January of last year agreed to plead guilty to criminal wrong doing and pay a $1 billion fine.

Takata Adds 3.3 Million Airbag Inflators to Ongoing Recall

Damaged car with passenger door open and view of deployed airbags

Takata has added another 3.3 million defective airbag inflators to its ongoing recall of airbag inflators that can explode upon deployment. The addition expands what is already the largest automotive recall in U.S. history.

About the Takata Airbag Recall Expansion

According to CNBC, the recall is being expanded to cover certain 2009, 2010, and 2013 vehicles manufactured by Honda, Toyota, Audi, BMW, Daimler, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Jaguar-Land Rover, Mazda, Mercedes-Benz, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, and Tesla.

The automakers will provide information on the specific models affected by the recall expansion when they file paperwork with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) latter this month.

Consumers affected by the recall can expect to be notified soon.

Takata Airbags Linked to 20 Deaths

With the latest expansion, recalls have been issued for more than 45 million vehicles equipped with defective Takata airbags. Despite initial recalls being issued more than four years ago, repair rates for vehicles fall between 2 percent and 65 percent depending on manufacturer.

The defective air bags have been linked to at least 20 deaths with the majority of those deaths occurring in Honda vehicles.

The faulty airbag fiasco has resulted in Takata and its U.S. unit, TK Holdings Inc., declaring bankruptcy.

Texas Woman Dies of Flesh Eating Bacteria After Eating Oyster

A Texas woman died after eating raw oysters and contracting flesh-eating bacteria.

About the Fatal Flash-Eating Bacteria

According to the KLFY, Jeannette LeBlanc purchased the oysters from a market in Westwego while on a trip to Louisiana in September. Soon after, LeBlanc developed a rash and about 36 hours later she was having trouble breathing.

Initially, LeBlanc and her friends thought it was an allergic reaction; however, doctors informed her that she had contracted flesh-eating bacteria called Vibrio. Vibrio is contracted by eating contaminated fish that is raw or under-cooked or by exposing open wounds to brackish water.

21 days later, on October 15th, 2017, LeBlanc died from the infection.

What are Vibrio Bacteria?

Vibrio bacteria are bacteria naturally found in certain coastal waters and tend to be a higher concentration between May and October, when waters are warm.

There are about a dozen Vibrio species which can causes illness in humans. The illness is referred to as vibriosis.

While most cases of vibriosis are mild with patients recovering within 3 days; more serious infections, those caused by Vibrio vulnificus, can become seriously ill and may need amputation. About 1 in 4 people who contract Vibrio vulnificus infections die.

In total, about 80,000 cases of vibriosis are recorded each year in the United States with about 52,000 being the result of contaminated food.

Top 3 Home Product Recalls of the New Year

It is less than a week into the New Year and federal agencies have already announced multiple recalls for dangerous foods, toys, electronics, medical devices, and automobiles. These are the Top 3 New Year recalls dealing with items you may find in your home.

Bean Bag Chair Covers

Comfort Research has recalled roughly 1,200 Ultra Lounge bean bag chair covers after determining the products may resulted in a suffocation hazard to children. While no injuries or deaths have been reported, bean bag chair covers with similar design flaws have been associated with child deaths in the past.

The recalled covers can be identified by three sewn-in tags. One tag reads “id COLORS” on the front and “RN48711” on the back. The second tag has the UPC label code “PO#12991” or “PO#13539” on the front. And, the third tag has the care and use instructions printed on one side and the warning notice on the other.
