Fiat Chrysler Issues Recall Notices to 160,000 Pacifica Owners

Fiat Chrysler will begin mailing out recall notices to more than 160,000 Pacifica owners to address a defect that may cause engines to stall, even when the vehicles are in motion.

Details of the Pacifica Minivan Recall

According to recall reports, certain conditions can cause the Pacificas’ engine control module to incorrectly assess the operating status, potentially causing the engine to stall. Drivers who have experienced the defect report having to shut off and restart their vehicles before they are able to resume driving.

Among the complaints filed by Pacifica owners were reports of engine stalls occurring in intersections and on highways. Fiat Chrysler confirmed one accident in connection with the engine stall defect.

Complaints began last year and after dealers and Chrysler engineers failed to pinpoint the problem. In November, the Center for Auto Safety filed a petition calling on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to open a formal investigation into the defect and order a recall.

Recall Comes After a Series of Fiat Chrysler Recall Controversies

The Pacifica recall comes on the heels of two recent controversies involving Fiat Chrysler’s handling of recalls and recalled vehicles.

In 2015, NHTSA ruled that Fiat Chrysler had failed to promptly notify vehicle owners of recalls and delayed initiating repairs of defective models in 23 recalls covering roughly 11 million vehicles. The automaker was fined $105 million.

Fiat Chrysler was the subject of national headlines again last year when actor Anton Yelchin was killed by his Jeep Grand Cherokee which rolled backward down his driveway and crushed him. The vehicle was part of a recall related to defective electronic gearshifts, but it had not been repaired prior to the fatal accident. A wrongful death lawsuit was filed by Yelchin’s family.

Kratom Linked to Dozens of Illnesses from Salmonella

Kratom, a popular botanical drug that was already under fire from U.S. health officials claiming it is an addictive opioid, is now facing scrutiny following a string of salmonella infections.

About the Kratom Salmonella Outbreak

Kratom is a naturally growing herb found in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Papua New Guinea. Over recent years, kratom has been sold increasingly as a dietary supplement meant to manage pain and boost energy.

Earlier this month, the FDA issued an alert declaring the botanical an opioid after a computer analysis found that nearly all of kratom’s major compounds bind to opioid receptors on the human brain cells and two of the most prevalent compounds activate opioid receptors. The FDA also noted that 44 deaths have been reported in connection with kratom, often in combination with other substances.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is now urging Americans to avoid kratom due to the risk of salmonella.

According to CBS News, at least 28 instances of salmonella infection have been recorded across 20 states. 11 people have been hospitalized, although no deaths have been reported. Of the 11 people interviewed in connection with the outbreak, eight had reported consuming kratom in pill, powder, or tea form.

Among other controversies facing kratom is a sharp spike in kratom-related poisonings, with kratom-related calls to poison centers increasing tenfold between 2010 and 2015 from 26 to 263.

Salmonella Symptoms and Statistics

  • According to the CDC, Salmonella causes in one million food borne illnesses every year, resulting in 19,000 hospitalizations and 380 deaths.
  • Common symptoms include:
    • Diarrhea
    • Fever
    • Abdominal cramps
  • Symptoms appear 12 to 72 hours after infection and usually persist for four to seven days.
  • Infections and illness tend to be more serious in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems.

Britax Sued for Failing to Recall Strollers

The popular B.O.B. Jogging Stroller has fallen under scrutiny as the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) sues Britax for refusing to recall the strollers for what it considers to be a significant safety hazard.

Almost 100 Injuries Reported with B.O.B. Jogging Stroller

According to WebMD, the defect occurs when the quick release lever on the jogging stroller’s front wheel is not properly secured. Under these conditions, the front wheel can fall off while the stroller is in motion.

Since 2012, roughly 200 people have reported the defect to regulators, with nearly 100 reports concerning injuries to children and adults. Among the injuries reported are:

  • Concussions
  • Head and Face Injuries
  • Bruises
  • Broken Bones
  • Torn Ligaments
  • Hip Injuries

Still, Britax has refused to recall the strollers saying the issue is not a mechanical defect but one of parents not following instructions for safe use.

In their complaint, the CPSC is calling on Britax to cease distribution on 17 B.O.B. stroller models and to offer a remedy to consumers which may include a repair, replacement, or refund.

Lawsuits by the CPSC are especially rare with the last such action being filed in 2012. That lawsuit dealt with high-powered Zen Magnets which could attract through the intestinal wall if swallowed, resulting in tissue injury, sepsis, and potentially death.

Fiat Chrysler Issues Recall for Nearly 230,000 Trucks, Faulty Shifters

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles plans to recall roughly 228,500 trucks sold in the United States, Canada, and Mexico to repair faulty shifters.

About the Fiat Chrysler Shifter Recall

According to Reuters, the brake transmission shift interlock (BTSI) equipped in the vehicles may overheat. This can cause the shifter to be repositioned without brake-pedal application even when the key is not in the ignition.

If, for example, the defect were to occur when the vehicle was in the park position, the vehicle could begin moving inadvertently, posing a roll away hazard and increasing the risk of crash and injury.

The company said it is unaware of any injuries or accidents and that the recall is limited to vehicles equipped with gear-shifters on their steering columns.

Fiat Chrysler previously said it would recall 1.8 million in December to fix a defective part that could allow the driver to shift out of park without depressing the brake pedal.
