Officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) are pushing for more studies to be conducted on the effects of hydraulic fracturing on human health. Hydraulic fracturing (fracking) is a controversial drilling method that uses water, sand and chemicals to release natural gas from wells.

“We do not have enough information to say with certainty whether shale gas drilling poses a threat to public health,” Christopher Portier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Environmental Health and the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.

More Fracking Studies Needed

Hydro-fracking has raised a number of health concerns in recent months- from lung ailments caused by mining silica sand to contamination of ground water near drilling sites- and the CDC wants to make sure each of these concerns is addressed.

CDC scientists want further studies which examine the various ways in which humans can be exposed to fracking products via contamination of air, water, soil, plants, and animals.
