Central Texas Trucker Killed in Freak Accident

A man from Moffat, Texas was fatally injured Tuesday after a freak accident left him crushed between his 18-wheeler and a gate.

Details of the Central Texas Accident

According to KWTX, 33-year-old Jeremiah Anderson was opening a gate to enter a property off Farm-to-Market Road when the tractor-trailer's brakes slipped, leading to Anderson becoming pinned between the semi and gate.

Authorities arrived to the scene of the accident, about 10 miles west of Gatesville near the small community of Purmela, shortly after 11:30 – Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene.

Department of Public Safety Trooper Harpin Meyers said the truck was hauling a large steel tank weighing an estimated 40,000 pounds. Anderson was alone when the incident occurred.

Trucking Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):

  • 3,921 people were killed in accidents involving large trucks in 2012. This marked a 4-percent increase from the 3,781 deaths recorded in 2011.
  • Another 104,000 people were injured in the 333,000 trucking accidents recorded in 2012 – up 18 percent from 88,000 in 2011.
  • Of those killed in trucking accident:
    • 697 were occupants of large trucks
    • 2,843 were occupants of other vehicles
    • 381 were non-occupants including pedestrians and bicyclists
