Chicago Bus Crash Injures At Least 15

The Chicago Tribune is reporting a collision involving a Chicago Transit Authority bus and an SUV that left at least 15 people injured Monday morning.

Details of the Bus Accident

CTA officials say the accident happened just before 10 a.m. on South Western Avenue in the Gage Park area of Chicago.

Witnesses report seeing an SUV driving south on Western Avenue when it began to drift across the center line.
The driver of the northbound No. 49 bus attempted to alert the SUV by blowing the horn, but the SUV continued to cross into oncoming traffic where it struck the bus.

Emergency crews had to extricate the driver of the SUV who was then transported to a local hospital in serious-to-critical condition. Two children that were in the back seat of the SUV were also taken to the hospital in fair-to-serious condition.

Twelve bus passengers were transported to various area hospitals. Six passengers were listed in fair-to-serious condition; six were listed in good condition. Nine additional passengers refused treatment at the scene.

  • In 2011, there were 283 people killed in crashes involving buses in the U.S.
  • That same year, approximately 24,000 people were injured in bus accidents.
  • The estimated cost in 2011 of all commercial motor vehicle crashes was $87 billion.
