The Chicago Sun-Times is reporting that a 58-year-old man died on Saturday in a skydiving accident that happened when he apparently had trouble controlling the parachute after it opened.

According to police, Gaby Ferraca died on Saturday morning at the 14th annual skydiving festival at the Arecibo Regional Airport.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration, local police, and prosecutors are currently investigating the circumstances of the accident.

An organizer for the event, Jason Gonzalez said that this accident was the first death associated with the skydiving festival in 15 years.

Gonzalez further said that Ferraca was an experienced skydiver and that he attributed the accident to a pilot error and that no technical malfunctions took place – the circumstances of the accident remain under investigation, however.

Despite the accident, the festival, which attracts skydivers from the United States and Europe will continue through Monday.
