Child and Adult Killed in Fatal Salem Collision

A child and an adult are dead, and three other people are injured as the result of a multi-vehicle accident in Salem, Oregon.

Police Investigate the Fatal Salem Car Crash

The Statesman Journal reports that the crash occurred Tuesday evening along Turner Road SE when at least two vehicles collided between Airway Road and Kuebler Boulevard SE.

While authorities have not released the names of the victims, police have confirmed that one child and one adult are dead due to the collision, and three others were taken to the hospital with possibly life-threatening injuries.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the accident as well as identify the victims. Lt. Dave Okada of the Salem Police Department told reporters than no further information on the victimms’ identities would be released until next of kin has been properly notified.

According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 34,080 people died as a result of auto accidents in 2012.

2012 marked an increase in the total number of traffic related fatalities, up from 32,367 in 2011.

Oregon experienced 336 traffic related fatalities in 2012 with alcohol playing a factor in 132 of the recorded deaths – 39 percent.
