Child Fatally Struck in El Paso Parking Lot

A 2-year-old boy was killed Sunday when he was struck by a car in the parking lot of a Lower Valley church.

Details of the Fatal Pedestrian Accident

The El Paso Times reports that the accident occurred along the 980 block of Kessler in the parking lot of Vino Nuevo.

The child was struck around 12:00 noon and was the second fatal pedestrian accident involving a small child in El Paso in under a week.

Neither the child’s name nor the name of the driver have been released, and additional details concerning the events that lead up to the accident are being held until further investigations are completed.

The driver is not facing criminal charges.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

Following information provided by the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center:

  • 4,743 pedestrians and 726 bicyclists were killed in traffic collisions in 2012.
  • This means that more than 12 pedestrians were killed in an accident involving a motor vehicle every day.
  • Additionally, 76,000 pedestrian were injured in 2012 – roughly one pedestrian every 7 minutes.
  • 69 percent of the pedestrians killed in 2012 were male, and 73 percent of pedestrian deaths occurred in urban areas.
