Child Killed in Atascosa Trucking Accident

A child was killed and several others were injured Monday morning after a van lost control and was struck by an 18-wheeler in southwest Bexar County, Texas.

About the Bexar County Trucking Accident

According to the San Antonio Express-News, a van carrying a family of six was travelling north along Interstate 35 when the vehicle unexpectedly lost control.

The van struck the guard rail near Shepherd Road in Atascosa before being hit from behind by a tractor-trailer carrying dirt and grass, causing the van to spin and strike a third vehicle.

Three of the four children in the van were airlifted to University Hospital in San Antonio for treatment. One of the children was pronounced dead at the hospital – the other two had life-threatening injuries.

The fourth child and the two adults in the vehicle were transported to the hospital via ambulance. None were determined to have life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the 18-wheeler and the occupants of the third vehicle were uninjured.

  • In 2013, 3,377 people lost their lives in auto accidents in Texas. This marks a 1.05 percent decrease from the 3,413 deaths recorded in 2012.
  • Another 232,041 people were injured in traffic accidents with 89,270 people sustaining serious injuries.
  • Using available crash reports, TxDOT determined:
    • One person was killed in an auto accident in Texas every 2 hours and 36 minutes.
    • One person was injured every 2 minutes and 16 seconds.
    • A reportable crash occurred every 71 seconds.
