Child Killed in Providence Bus Accident

9-year-old Ani Emdjian was killed last Thursday when she was hit by a Rhode Island Public Transit Authority bus.

About the Fatal Bus Crash

The Providence Journal reports that Ani was walking with her father at the intersection of Smith Street and Holden when she was struck by the Route 57 bus. The incident occurred around 8:40 am.

The bus driver, 42-year-old Eric Seaberg, is described as a 16-year transit agency veteran with a good driving record.

Providence authorities are continuing with their investigations into the accident.

Pedestrian Accident Statistics

The following information was provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • 4,743 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents in 2012. An additional 76,000 pedestrians were injured.
  • Pedestrians are 1.5 times more likely to be killed in a car crash on each trip than passenger vehicle occupants.
  • One in every five children between the ages of 5 and 15 killed in auto accidents in 2012 were pedestrians.
