Child Struck by 18-Wheeler in Boise

A 5-year-old boy is in critical condition after being struck by a tractor-trailer in Boise, Idaho Monday afternoon.

About the Trucking Accident

According to FOX News, the child was riding a bicycle when he was hit by an 18-wheeler at near the intersection of Cole Road and Fairview Avenue shortly before 3:30 pm.

Witnesses say the boy was riding his bike behind a young girl, also 5, when the accident happened.

The boy was rushed via ambulance to a local hospital. The child’s parents arrived at the scene shortly after the accident occurred and are now with the boy at the hospital.

Authority’s state that the road will remain closed as investigators reconstruct the accident.

Trucking Accident Statistics

  • According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), there were 3,921 trucking accident fatalities recorded in 2012 – up 4 percent from the 3,781 recorded in 2011.
  • Of those killed in trucking accidents, 10 percent were labeled non-occupants, a group that includes both pedestrians and pedalcyclists. Another 73 percent were determined to be occupants of passenger vehicles while 18 percent were listed as occupants of the large trucks.
  • There were also 104,000 people injured in trucking accidents, marking an 18 percent increase from the 88,000 injuries recorded in 2011.
  • Trucking accidents typically occurred on weekdays with 72 percent occurring during the daytime hours – 6:00 am to 5:59 pm
