Children Injured in Baltimore School Bus Roll Over Accident

The Baltimore Sun reports that a Baltimore County school bus, carrying ten middle school students and a driver, flipped over on its route to school on the morning of Friday, October 4, 2013.

Details of the Baltimore School Bus Accident

  • The accident occurred around 7:30 in the morning.
  • School bus appeared to have nearly flipped end-over-end before smashing into a tree.
  • The bus landed on its left side, nearly on its roof, amongst tree branches and other rubble.
  • No other vehicles or pedestrians were involved in the accident.
  • The cause of the accident is still under investigation.
  • The bus driver has not yet been identified.

Injuries Sustained from the Bus Accident

  • Students had to scramble out of the emergency exit of the bus.
  • No one was seriously injured; the worst reported injury was a sprained ankle.
  • Five students and the female bus driver were taken to a nearby hospital to be treated for those minor injuries; all students were released by that late afternoon.
  • Five other students were unharmed.
  • Some students were able to make it to school that morning.

  • National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) defines a school transportation-related crash as “a crash which involves, either directly or indirectly, a school bus body vehicle, or a non-school bus functioning as a school bus, transporting children to or from school or school-related activities.”
  • There were 1,236 fatal school transportation-related crashes from 2001 to 2010.
  • According to NHTSA, an average of 18 school-age children die in school transportation-related crashes each year. On average, six of those are occupants of school transportation vehicles. The other 12 are pedestrians killed by school transportation vehicles or other vehicles involved in school bus-related crashes.
