Chrysler Refuses to Recall Jeep Grand Cherokee and Liberty Vehicles

Chrysler is insisting its 2002-2007 model year Jeep Liberty and 1993-2004 model year Grand Cherokee vehicles are safe despite a massive government recall for fire and explosion hazards. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is attempting to recall 2.7 million Liberty and Grand Cherokee vehicles which are said to be at risk for fuel tank fires and explosions in a rear-end collision.

Jeep Vehicles Have Defective Design

The investigation into certain Jeep vehicle gas tanks began in 2010, after reports of catastrophic explosions were linked to the models.  According to the NHTSA, the problem involves the location of gas tanks on affected Jeep models. Those vehicles subject to the recall have their gas tanks mounted behind the rear axle, where the NHTSA says they are vulnerable in a crash.

The NHTSA has linked 15 deaths and 46 injuries to fires caused by rear-end collisions in these Jeep models.

Chrysler Insists that Jeeps are not Dangerous

“The company does not agree with NHTSA’s conclusions and does not intend to recall the vehicles cited in the investigation. The subject vehicles are safe and are not defective,” Chrysler's Response to NHTSA Recall Letter.

Chrysler is refusing to cooperate with the recall, claiming that the SUVs in question are not defective and that the accidents linked to the so-called gas tank issue occurred only as the result of high energy crashes.
