Details about the Home Explosion

A couple were killed in an explosion that happened at their Cleveland County home on Sunday evening, even though neighbors and other Good Samaritan’s attempted to help the couple. According to officials from Cleveland County, the explosion happened when a truck crashed into a propane tank at the couple’s home, according to WTVM News.

The couple has been identified as 74-year-old Johnie Newton and 76-year-old Naomi Newton.

They Newton were able to escape the fire, but later died from injuries sustained in the explosion. The initial accident happened at about 10:30 p.m. on Sunday evening.

State officials indicated that 24-year-old Thomas Pruitt’s 1997 pickup truck crossed the center line before it hit the shoulder of the roadway and plowed into the home. When the truck crashed into the home, it caused a propane tank to rupture and explode.

A witness at the scene of the accident said that Mr. Pruitt told him that he had fallen asleep at the time of the accident when he was operating the truck.

A neighbor from across the street helped Pruitt out of the vehicle and across the street to safety. Witnesses say they saw the couple in the home just moments before the house exploded, sending flames high into the air.

The Good Samaritans

At the time of the explosion, a former Marine happened to have been driving by, when he jumped out of the vehicle and ran into the burning house to help the couple. Others ran in behind the man. The Good Samaritans were able to get the couple out of the burning home.

Pruitt was taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. Neighbors at the scene of the accident spoke with Pruitt, who gave varying stories and explanations about the cause of the accident.
