Club Owners Liable for Fatal Drunk Driving Accident

Two Corpus Christi, Texas clubs owners are being held liable for $18.7 million by a Nueces County jury for a drunk driving collision that killed two people.

About the Corpus Christi Drunk Driving Lawsuit

  • According to the Corpus Christi Caller-Times, owners of clubs Cabaret (S & S Inc.) and Pockets Billiards (Westside Entertainment Inc.) are to pay $18.7 million in damages after a jury found the businesses liable in connection to the drunk driving death of Bryant Hernandez, 18.
  • According to the lawsuit, both bars overserved Jonathan Palacios, 22, and a bouncer from one of the bars even escorted Palacios to his car before allowing him get behind the wheel with a BAC more than three times the legal limit.
  • Palacios would later drive his vehicle in the wrong lane causing a head-on collision with Bryant Godofredo Hernandez, 18, resulting in the deaths of both drivers.  

Texas Drunk Driving Statistics

Information provided by the Century Council:

  •  In 2011, the state of Texas had a total of 1,213 total alcohol-impaired driving fatalities, roughly 40 percent of all recorded traffic fatalities in the state.
  • 175 of those killed in alcohol related collision were under the age of 21.
  • A BAC over .15 was recorded at 70 percent of fatal alcohol related accidents.
