Collision Involving Corrections Vehicle and 18-Wheeler

12 inmates and their corrections vehicle driver were taken to the hospital Tuesday morning following a collision with an 18-wheeler.

About the Trucking Accident

According to the Sand Mountain Reporter, a Marshall County Community Corrections vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer at about 2:30 am on Tuesday morning. The accident occurred at the intersection of Alabama 69 and Gunter Avenue.

As reported, the inmates were on their way back to the corrections facility from work. All 12 passengers along with the driver or the corrections vehicle were taken via ambulance to area hospitals following the collision.

At the time of the Sand Mountain Reporter's account, three of the six inmates admitted to Huntsville hospital had been released, while one was in critical condition.

The investigation into the accident continues.

Statistics for Accidents Involving Large Trucks

The following information was provided by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (TxDOT):

  • 3,921 people were killed in trucking accidents in 2012 – this marked a 3.3-percent increase from the 3,781 trucking deaths recorded in 2011.
  • Of those killed in trucking accidents in 2012:
    • 697 were occupants of large trucks
    • 2,843 were occupants of other vehicles
    • 381 were listed as nonoccupants including pedestrians and pedalcyclists
  • An additional 104,000 people were injured in trucking accidents in 2012, up from 88,000 in 2011.
