Construction Accident Leaves One Dead in North Carolina

One man was fatally injured on a job site in Shelby, North Carolina at a KSM construction site for a large company that is new to the area. The accident occurred at around 9:45 am Friday. The company, United Mechanical Corporation, is currently looking into what caused the accident.

Details of the Fatal Construction Accident

  • According to WCNC, the preliminary investigation indicates shows that a 10-inch pipe struck the private contractor in the head when the cap was removed from the concrete casting.
  • The company is an auto parts production facility, and the building remains under construction.
  • The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has already started an investigation into the death; OSHA workplace investigations typically take three-four months.
  • The victim's identity has yet to be released.

  • According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), 4,383 people died from work related injuries in 2012. The breaks down to 84 deaths a week or 12 deaths a day.
  • Contract work accounted for 16 percent of all work related fatalities in 2012.
  • It is estimated that four types of construction accidents, the “Fatal Four”, kill roughly 435 American workers every year:
    • Falls – 278 deaths
    • Struck by Object – 78 deaths
    • Electrocutions – 66 deaths
    • Caught-in/between – 13 deaths
