Construction Worker Dies in Log Accident

Last Wednesday evening, a falling tree trunk struck and killed a man working at a construction site in Arlington, Virginia.

About the Fatal Accident

According to ABC 7 News, the man, Franklin Talley Jr., was attempting to secure giant logs onto a flatbed truck when one rolled off and crushed him.

The accident occurred at 4854 North Rock Spring Road where construction crews were working on a home on the property, shortly before 6 p.m.

Franklin Talley Jr. was known to be a hard worker and a family man. The Arlington police are assuming no foul play was involved and are calling this a “tragic accident”.

Construction Accident Statistics

The Federal Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states:

  • Fatal work injuries in the private construction sector increased 5 percent from 2011 to 2012 (from 738 in 2011 to 775 in 2012). This is the first increase in construction deaths since 2006.
  • The construction industry accounted for the highest number of fatal work injuries in 2012.
  • In 2012, there were 849 deaths in the construction industry.
  • 4,383 fatal occupational injuries were reported in 2012.
